It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. Thoughts of warm blankets by the fireplace and dozens of holiday cookies fill your mind. You imagine the cold air as you go sledding. You anticipate exchanging gifts. And you cannot wait to spend New Year’s Eve with the people who mean the most to you.
Suddenly, you remember the final paper that’s due at midnight, the three study guides you have to finish reviewing and the presentation that’s still one minute too short. No matter where you are or what you celebrate, the luxury of vacation from school is blocked by the reality of final exams, and while students are universally worried, those at Villanova have reason to relax.
Although high school students may never have faced the intimidating clouds that cover us during finals week, it is important to understand that you can do anything you set your mind to. Every student has to face final exams and every student before you has gotten through them. Nobody is perfect, and any test can be stressful. Whether you’re a freshman at Villanova or a senior at another university, it is okay to worry. It is okay to be nervous, but it is not okay to let that stop you from doing your best.
As a student at Villanova, I recognize the difficulties in meeting every deadline and acing every exam, but those hesitations should never stop you from achieving your personal goals. For students at Villanova, there are great resources to take advantage of during final exams and every other week of the year. Resources like the Math Learning Resource Center and the Writing Center can help any student make improvements. But if the help of some awesome Villanova students isn’t enough, we have warm, cuddly, comforting dogs visiting campus at the end of every semester! Nothing will make you feel as confident as the positive smile of a new furry friend. At Villanova, students are challenged academically, but have every chance to succeed inside and outside of the classroom.
Amidst the wagging tails, excellent resources and books being quoted in essays, final exams can seem like too much to handle, but whether you’re a student at Villanova or not, you can excel. No matter what, you must remember to do the best you can — because in the end, the only person you need to impress is yourself. Knowing you worked hard will make rush of cold air more thrilling, the taste of each cookie sweeter, and the times spent with family even more celebratory.
